Karnataka Courts Drop 21 Communal Violence Cases Involving Gau Rakshaks Based on State Govt Order
Following the requests from ministers and MLAs, the state government decided not to carry on with the prosecution and issued an order to this effect on August 31, 2020. The courts in line with the order declared cases as withdrawn. Â

New Delhi: As many as 21 cases relating to communal violence and violence that had taken place during the course of ‘cow protection’ were dropped in Karnataka by various trial courts between October and December 2020. âRaising deep concern over the disappearances of hundreds of the agitating farmers in Delhi, representatives of six human rights advocacy groups jointly said, “As many as 200 protesters have been detained, while many have been booked under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and Sedition sections in Delhi following the incidents took place at Red Fort on January 26”.
A press conference was organized by these groupsâKhalra Mission Organization, Punjab Documentation and Advocacy Project, Punjab Human Rights Organisation, Lawyers for Human Rights International, Peopleâs Union for Civil Liberties and Human Rights Law Network.Â
MUMBAI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday opposed Elgar Parishad accused P Varavara Rao’s bail plea on medical grounds but said the Bombay high court may impose conditions on the state to ensure adequate medical care and facilities to him in Taloja prison.
The Additional solicitor general (ASG) said, “My argument is that instead of imposing conditions on him, impose conditions on the state. On how he must be kept in the prison ward, we will be bound by the conditions.”
A bench of Justice SS Shinde and Justice Manish Pitale said, “We must consider law and humanity and then we must strike a balance.’’

Human rights activists released a book on Sudha Bharadwaj, the trade unionist and lawyer incarcerated in the 2018 Bhima-Koregaon violence case, on Sunday, the last day of a five-day session, Repeal UAPA, organised by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL).
The 316-page book,
A Life in Law and Activism: Sudha Bharadwaj Speaks, was unveiled during a webinar titled, ‘Why is the State afraid of Sudha Bharadwaj?’. Published by PUCL, the book chronicles Ms. Bharadwaj’s early life and work as an advocate and activist and is based on interviews by lawyers Darshana Mitra and Santanu Chakraborty.

The following is an excerpt from Sudha Bharadwaj Speaks: A Life in Law and Activism published by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties. Bharadwaj, a lawyer, trade unionist and rights activist, was arrested in 2018 in the Elgar Parishad case. The book is based on a long interview of Bharadwaj conducted before her arrest by two young lawyers, Santanu Chakraborty and Darshana Mitra.
