Inclement weather forced ALDOT to modify
its work schedule earlier this week; however, the contractor will be able to resume scheduled work after showers leave the area and should have the new arch placed by late afternoon today. The arches are necessary, as they will hold the weight of the bridge over McFarland Boulevard and will allow the contractor to remove the underneath temporary support, ALDOT said in a press release announcing the scheduled work. The design will allow for more space on McFarland Boulevard where the single-point urban interchange will be constructed. The SPUI will improve travel time while also enhancing safety.
More of McFarland Closed After Coal Truck Overturns
Motorists are urged to avoid McFarland Boulevard as it intersects Skyland Boulevard today while crews assess an overturned coal truck.
The incident happened just before 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. There is not a clear reason why the truck capsized, but its contents spilled out into the roadway and median right by the Motel 6 on McFarland Boulevard.
Crews have blocked off entry to all eastbound lanes of McFarland Boulevard from the Skyland intersection. Commuters will need to find a detour to get past the mess until it is cleared.
