Ricker resigns as Minnesota education commissioner

ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - Mary Cathryn Ricker has resigned as Minnesota s education commissioner. Her last day is March 19.
Deputy Commissioner Heather Mueller will take over April 1. Mueller acted as the department s face to the public during the pandemic and its impact on schools.
Ricker has been mostly absent from the public eye for months, even as her agency was tasked with explaining decisions to students, teachers and parents about distance learning and the return to school. The Walz administration said Ricker wishes to leave state service to spend more time in the classroom with Minnesota students, in a release.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) Her special adoration for students, 30 years of teaching experience and incredible adaptability over this past year are just some of the reasons why Dianne Johns, of Franklin Elementary School, was nominated for the Golden Apple award.
“She cares about us and wants to always have fun,” said Keegan Beckendorf, a student.
Johns has served as a gym teacher for 30 years, but during the pandemic, she has been reassigned to teach fifth-grade homeroom.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) Across the state, thousands of school bus drivers deliver students to and from school safely every day.
Often serving as one of the first people kids see when they start their school day, to one of their last.
“I say ‘hey, have a good afternoon, I’ll see you tomorrow,’” said Alan Lee.
For 32 years, Lee has continued to bring kids to and from school safely throughout the Mankato Area Public Schools District.
