Let’s Back the Blue 5K supports police departments By Sandy Rose Schwieterman - For the Sidney Daily News WAPAKONETA – Let’s Back The Blue founder Ann Niemeyer said race organizer Amy Kentner of Roadrunner Enterprises has created a May 15 Let’s Back The Blue 5K fundraising event in Wapakoneta that offers fun activities for young and old while raising money for police supplies. For the adults, Kentner said that 5K run/walk participants will receive a medal that lights up and a Let’s Back the Blue challenge coin. Hot dogs, chips and a drink will be available at the finish line.

Water tower work begins in June By Sandy Rose Schwieterman - For the Sidney Daily News MINSTER – Minster Council met May 4 to hear about plans for the village’s water supply and upcoming road projects. Also, the dates reopening village recreation facilities were revealed. Village Administrator Don Harrod said they are beginning to plan for the repairs to be made to the Ohio Street Water Tower. After discussions with Danone and tower repair company Worldwide Industries, he said the week of June 7 will be when they can drain the water town and complete leak repairs. At that time, he said, Danone will also be in their maintenance shut down period, reducing their need for water.

New Bremen to fund swimming pool repairs By Sandy Rose Schwieterman - For the Sidney Daily News NEW BREMEN – Despite failing to obtain a state of Ohio grant, the New Bremen Council agreed at its meeting Monday, April 12, that repairs would continue on the municipal pool. Village Administrator Brent Richter reported they had not been successful in getting a $70,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant program. The money would have been used to defray the cost of a $105,200 project being done by Shinn Brothers of Celina to replace the various drain pipes around and under the municipal pool. As a result, the village will continue to use their own funds.

New Knoxvile BOE approves teachers’ union contract By Sandy Rose Schwieterman - For the Sidney Daily News NEW KNOXVILLE – The New Knoxville Board of Education met Monday night to learn about the upcoming kindergarten class, to approve renewal of part time personnel contracts and view the new welding booths. They also agreed on a new two-year contract with the teachers’ union. Superintendent and elementary Principal Kim Waterman, reported that Tuesday, they were screening 26 children for readiness for kindergarten this fall. She said they expected all of the children to pass the screening and be ready for school. She said they would be forming two classes to get the new students a head start on reading skills.

Signage request put on hold By Sandy Rose Schwieterman - For the Sidney Daily News NEW BREMEN – A 30 minute discussion during the New Bremen Council meeting Monday night resulted in little progress on signage for the Lockkeeper’s House. But definite answers came about the major leaks at the pool. Members of the local historical society are seeking to post a sign on the historical recreation of the building that housed the lockkeeper and his family along the banks of the Miami Erie Canal in downtown New Bremen. Mayor Bob Parker said it was his understanding the building was never meant to be signed, since it would detract from the historical design. Former Council member John Schwartz agreed, saying a sign was not appropriate on the building itself. Historical members expressed concerns that a lack of signage would make the building hard to locate. The issue was sent back to committee and it was agreed that inquiries would be made to add more signage along the streets and at c
