During the last hearing on the project in January, a handful of Santa Clarita residents utilized the public comments section to voice their support for the proposed resort, while more called in to voice concerns, which were echoed by the commissioners.
One such concern raised by Commissioner Lisa Eichman was that the proposed hotel rooms and villas looked far too similar to apartments and townhomes, and that the property could be turned into residences.
“If this goes to community commercial, this can be converted to apartments,” Eichman said at the time. “It looks like the hotel is apartments, the villas look like houses.”

The Sand Canyon Resort project is scheduled to return before the Santa Clarita Planning Commission Tuesday with a series of revisions, following multiple concerns raised by both commissioners and residents.
Sand Canyon Country Club owner Steve Kim wants to add a resort and spa across 77 acres of his 300-acre country club on the northeast corner of Sand Canyon Road and Robinson Ranch Road.
The proposal consists of four three-story hotels with a combined 322 rooms; 14 two-story villas; nine one-story villas, multiple dining options and outdoor recreation for trails, swimming, tennis and pickleball, and an existing 27-hole golf course. The plans also call for the removal of 21 non-heritage oak trees. A zone change from “open space” to “community commercial” for two of the four site lots is also proposed.

As winds continue to whip through the Santa Clarita Valley, firefighters are battling another brush fire in Canyon Country where structures may be threatened.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to reports of a brush fire on the 28100 block of Whites Canyon Road, near Todd Longshore Park, just after 2:30 p.m., according to spokesman Chris Thomas.
“Units just got on (the) scene a few minutes ago,” Thomas said at 2:50 p.m. “(They’re) getting structure protection in place because they do see structures possibly threatened.”
There has not yet been a size up of the blaze, Thomas added.
SCV Sheriff’s Station officials advised residents avoid the area as crews actively work to extinguish the fire, according to a social media post.
