9 & 10 News May 24, 2021 A new apprenticeship program in Manistee County is getting more police officers out on the streets. Northwest Michigan Works and the Manistee County Sheriff’s Department have teamed up to offer a police officer apprenticeship the first in the state of Michigan. “It’s a great job, it’s a great career,” said Manistee County Sheriff Brian Gutowski. “We want to do what we can to attract good people. This new apprenticeship would offer students the experience of day to day life in law enforcement. “That’s anywhere from working traffic patrol, stopping vehicles, doing traffic enforcement,” said Gutowski. “Here at the sheriff’s office, we do a lot more than just what you would generally think of law enforcement. We do animal control, we have marine patrol, we have a lot of different facets to what we do, so they’re going to get across the board training in all those facets of law enforcement.”
