Melissa Ojanen worked as an articling student in 2016 at Acumen Law, in British Columbia. Her employment didn’t last long.
A few months after she was hired, Ojanen attended a staff party and complained about her salary and about a colleague. A few days later, the principal of Acumen, Paul Doroshenko, suspended Ojanen, demanding the return of her keys and that she leave the office immediately.

Ojanen apologized and a few days after her suspension was allowed to return to work on the condition that Ojanen attend counseling and not enter the workplace after hours. Eventually Doroshenko also returned her office keys.
