Mila Fashion inks agreement with BoI to build modern garment factory at Welioya

The agreement was signed by Chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, Sanjaya Mohottala, and Director of Mila Fashion, Hemantha Yatawara. Since its inception in 2009, the group has established itself as the supplier of choice for high street retailers in the UK and Europe, including Primark, ASDA, Sainsbury’s, ASOS, Next and River Island, from its network of factories in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Not All Detainees Are Equal: Class, Ethnicity and the Prevention of Terrorism Act

Kanagasabai Thevathasan is a 64-year-old prisoner I met while I was at the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka. Twelve years have passed since he was arrested, more than ten of which he has spent in prison.  Thevathasan began fasting unto death on 6 January 2021, which he called off on 16 January for three weeks  after promises were made by the prison authorities to speak with the relevant authorities to expedite his cases. Thevathasan is currently appealing his conviction under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), and is requesting his hearings be expedited and that he be granted bail.  His story is like that of hundreds arrested under the PTA since its enactment in 1979. According to him, he was abducted by men in civilian clothing, held at an unauthorized place of detention for a week, tortured, forced to sign a confession and thereafter transferred to the custody of a police station. Senior ASG Sarath Jayamanne retires after 32 years as a top prosecutor

Senior Additional Solicitor General Sarath Jayamanne, PC, retires from service on January 16 after 32 years as a prosecutor with the Attorney General’s Department. As a counsel, he figured in the prosecution of many landmark cases including the Hokandara murder, Katuneriya double murder, Tony Martin case, Kobeigane beauty queen case, Murder of High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya and Mirusivil massacre. Jayamanne also served as the Director-General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) at one time. He is a lecturer in Evidence and Criminal Procedure at the Sri Lanka Law College, Faculty of Law University of Colombo and the Open University of Sri Lanka. The many top positions he has held in the public service reflects his versatility as a legal luminary.
