Court orders attachment of train for failure to pay compensation

The Third Additional Subordinate Court here passed an order on Thursday to attach the Vaigai Express rake following the failure of the Southern Railway to pay balance compensation amount to a labourer who had become immobile in a train accident reported in 2003, despite an order from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court fixing the liability on the railways to pay the compensation.
The Third Additional Subordinate Judge K. Vivekananthan passed the order to attach the rake from the locomotive to the brake van.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the State to consider the plea of a petitioner who sought a direction to the government to ensure that 18 % reservation for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates was followed in filling vacancies in the government-aided private schools not being a minority school.
The court was hearing the public interest litigation petition filed by S.M.A. Pon Gandhimathi Nathan of Thoothukudi district. He said that these schools should reserve 18 % of vacancies in the teaching and non teaching posts as per the Tamil Nadu Recognised Private Schools (Regulation) Rules. However, most of the schools were not following the reservation, he said.

V. Annalakshmi, 38, a candidate of Srirangam Assembly constituency and daughter of a slain activist, on Wednesday lodged a complaint with police expressing fears for her safety.
The complaint came after a banner featuring her father and her slain brother was disfigured by unknown persons at Muthalaipattti near Kulithalai.
According to sources, she put up a hoarding soliciting votes in a field near the spot where her father Veeramalai and brother Nallathambi were hacked to death by a gang in July 2019 for filing a contempt of court petition as part of their fight against encroachers on Muthalaipatti Eri.

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court recently enhanced the compensation awarded by a Motor Accident Tribunal of Pudukkottai to a woman by Rs 1 crore. The woman had suffered 100 per cent permanent disability in an accident in 2013.
The woman, M Sri Vidhya, stated in her petition that she met with an accident on February 24, 2013 after a tanker lorry rammed her car. She suffered a severe spinal cord injury, which left her immobile (below the hip) and dependent on others for day-to-day activities.
