Taking cognisance of reports by medical experts, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has permitted the termination of pregnancy of a 15-year-old girl from Virudhunagar. The court also ordered that a monthly maintenance of ₹5,000 be paid to the girl for 36 months.
The court was hearing the petition filed by a woman who sought the termination of the pregnancy of her niece. The girl had lost her father in 2012 and was looked after by her aunt and uncle as her mother was of unsound mind.
Consultation for designing of power transmission lines
Taking note of the issue raised by a petitioner on how electricity transmission lines should be designed so as to not disturb agricultural lands or render large tracts of agricultural fields uncultivable, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has asked a copy of the petition to be forwarded to the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras, so that it can come out with suggestions.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice M.M. Sundresh directed that the petition be forwarded to the Head of Electrical and Mechanical Departments, IIT – Madras, and sought a report by the next hearing date on February 15. The points that have been raised could be considered in the report, the court said.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the State to pay ₹2 lakh as cost to a differently abled medical aspirant, taking note of the fact that he was unfairly denied a medical seat.
The court was hearing the writ petition filed in 2019 by G. Arun Kumar. The medical aspirant first sought relief in 2018. He was not granted medical admission as the Selection Committee had disputed the certificate obtained by him.
Earlier, the court had directed the Director of Medical Education to constitute a fresh medical board and give a certificate of eligibility to the petitioner. The Board that was constituted confirmed the status of the petitioner as a differently abled person.
HC quashes FIR against advocate

AAA The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has quashed an FIR registered in 2020 against advocate S. Vanchinathan. He had staged a protest against the amendments made to the Citizenship Act in January last in Madurai.
The FIR registered by S.S. Colony police said that six persons, including Mr. Vanchinathan, were protesting against the amendments made to the Citizenship Act. They had not only committed public nuisance but also caused hindrance to free flow of vehicular traffic.
Justice R. Hemalatha observed that no untoward incident had taken place. The petitioner had organised the protest and the FIR had not disclosed any act of violence. Under the circumstances, the FIR was quashed.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has set aside a disciplinary order passed against an employee of Tamil Nadu Khadi and Village Industries Board.
The court was hearing a writ petition filed by K. Ramesh from Kumbakonam in 2012, challenging stoppage of increment for a year without cumulative effect passed against him by the disciplinary authority.
The disciplinary authority and the appellate body imposed the punishment over misappropriation of 1.2 kg of white silk after the charge that he made corrections in the stock register through the khadi inspector.
