Lawn Manor Academy staff become school s first mental health first aiders

LAWN Manor Academy staff have trained as the school s first mental health first aiders. Luke Stacy, Freya Koza, David Franklin and Sally Holgate at Lawn Manor Academy undertook an intensive course by Mental Health First Aid England. They will be the first point of contact for employees if they are experiencing emotional distress, or suffering from stress, anxiety or depression. Maths teacher Freya said: “Teaching during the pandemic was a lonely experience. Many of us were teaching virtually, which meant staring at a laptop all day long and being confined to one space, as we were unable to move around the school.

Antidepressants are no cure-all for children s mental health issues

Will nobody think of the children? Not in this government, no. Credit: Moment RF If you want to see how badly a government is failing its children, look at how many of those young people are on antidepressants. A report published this week found that more than 27,000 children were prescribed the drugs last year, a figure 40 per cent higher than five years ago. The number spiked during the first lockdown, while NHS figures show there was a 28 per cent rise in children being referred to mental health services between April and December 2020, amounting to 80,000 more cases. Even before the pandemic, child mental health services – all mental health services – were struggling. In 2018, a Panorama investigation found that many children only received proper care after attempting suicide, and that, due to years of government underfunding, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) were “not fit for purpose”.
