Rochdale News | News Headlines | World Autism Awareness Week: life as an autistic adult woman

World Autism Awareness Week: life as an autistic adult woman Date published: 01 April 2021 Actually Aspling - Victoria Whiting Autistic blogger ‘Actually Aspling’ is sharing her story for World Autism Awareness Week 2021 (29 March – 4 April), of being an adult woman diagnosed with the condition. Autism is around four times more common in boys than in girls, but studies have suggested the condition often goes undiagnosed in girls, who are more likely to camouflage or hide their symptoms.  Growing up, I always felt like I was different, the odd one out – but it wasn’t until I was 25 that I was given an explanation.

Platform: Girls need an earlier diagnosis of autism

That means that for every four boys diagnosed with autism, there is one girl. What we think is that the prevalence rate is actually higher for girls and women, but that we re missing them. The diagnostic criteria used now is the same for both: social and communication difficulties; restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests; sensory sensitivities. What boys have most often, however, is a lack of motivation and the knowledge of how to communicate. Girls can mask this and compensate for it. The gold-standard tests in autism assessment are ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised) and both have male-autism type in mind. ADOS, in particular, tests social and communication skills - how the person reacts to tasks, how they respond, eye contact and how they are back and forth in conversation.

When Brooklynn rolls a small toy car along the floor, her mother rolls another one next to her. When the 3-year-old girl leaps into the air, her mother hops a little higher. And when the child makes a few sounds with her mouth, her mother makes the same sounds back. For the past five months, an occupational therapist from Easterseals of Northeast Central Florida has visited Brooklynn at her Palm Coast home. The occupational therapist has taught her mother, Cherish Moscowitz, how to use play to help Brooklynn gain language and social skills, which are common trouble areas for children with autism.
