Local group promotes awareness about human trafficking

January 26, 2021 A local group is working to build awareness about human trafficking. Jamie Counsell with the Rock County Human Trafficking Task Force says the pandemic may be preventing victims from coming forward.  Counsell says the top local concern is youth sex trafficking.  She says the problem has been reported in every county in Wisconsin.  With January being Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Counsell is encouraging residents to become aware of the signs and report anything suspicious. She says a good place to start is with the group’s website and Facebook page.

33 missing children found in anti-human trafficking operation in Southern California elisfkc2 / Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0 Thirty-three missing children were recovered this month in an anti-human trafficking operation led by FBI’s Los Angeles field office, the bureau said in a statement Friday. Of the 33 children recovered during “Operation Lost Angels,” eight were being sexually exploited at the time of their recovery, the FBI said. The operation began on January 11. Two children were recovered multiple times during the operation, the FBI said, noting it’s not uncommon for rescued victims to return to commercial sex trafficking “either voluntarily or by force, fraud, or coercion.”
