Bars, Restaurants, and Patrons Reminded of COVID-19 Regulations With St. Patrick’s Day celebrations kicking off this weekend, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission is reminding bars and taverns to serve patrons responsibly. That includes adhering to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Emergency Order. Businesses are also reminded to verify that their customers are 21 years old or older and to deny service to intoxicated individuals. The MDHHS Gathering and Face Mask Order allows indoor dining and includes guidelines of 50% capacity, an 11 p.m. curfew, and requires social distancing. Businesses that violate the emergency order will risk having their license suspended or revoked.

GARRETT NEESE CALUMET Cafe Rosetta is one step closer to reopening after a joint inspection conducted last week by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department. MAPS addresses pandemic’s impact on student performance MCHD?to call residents today for vaccine appointment scheduling; local bar penalized; officials warn of scams Feb 24, 2021 MARQUETTE Marquette Area Public Schools still is dealing with the impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on students’ education. At the Monday MAPS Board of Education meeting, Marquette Senior High School Principal Jon Young gave an update on recent academic progress. “On a four-year average, we typically have about 106 students that fail a class of some sort,” said Young, who noted that makes up 11% of the student population. Earlier in the 2020-21 school year, Young shared data that indicated that 51% of online students were failing one or more classes, with 16% of in-person students failing one or more classes.

cbleck@miningjournal.net MARQUETTE Relief totaling approximately $52.5 million for nearly 6,000 small businesses across Michigan has been awarded to date through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Michigan Small Business Survival Grant program, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on Wednesday. “The Michigan Small Business Survival Grant Program provides crucial support to Michigan’s small businesses hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Whitmer said in a statement. “These grants, combined with additional business relief efforts offered by the MEDC, will create a strong foundation for Michigan’s long-term economic recovery. “As we distribute the safe and effective vaccine and work to end the pandemic once and for all, I will continue partnering with leaders across the state and urging passage of the MI COVID Recovery plan to provide relief for our small businesses, protect public health and jump start our economy.”

State Reinstates Spanky s Liquor License

An additional eight businesses in Michigan  had their liquor licenses suspended, including one bar in Battle Creek’s Urbandale. According to a release from the Michigan State Police Department on Tuesday, the suspensions came after a series of violations of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Emergency Order. The suspensions were made between December 9th through the 14th. On December 9, 2020, MLCC Commissioners ordered emergency suspensions of the liquor licenses and permits held by Spanky’s, Inc. d/b/a  Spanky’s Tavern located at 1414 Michigan Ave. West in Battle Creek. Spanky s Tavern did get their license re-instated after a hearing on Zoom on Monday afternoon with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.  Licensee Barry Beamish was assessed a fine for both counts related to the suspension order, and the license was fully reinstated effective December 15th by Michigan Administrative Law Judge Mike St. John.
