State officials press White House to do more as coronavirus task force quietly issues dire warnings

Dec 24, 2020 2:12 PM EDT While President Donald Trump is spending more of his waning days in office on meritless attempts to overturn the election, the White House coronavirus task force is privately warning states more must be done to address the worsening pandemic ahead of an anticipated post-Christmas surge. During the current winter surge, daily COVID-19 cases are more than 10 times higher than in the spring and 3.5 times higher than during the summer surge. Weekly fatalities are now 2.5 times higher than in the summer, according to a task force report sent to states this week and obtained by PBS NewsHour. The report noted that a stabilization in cases, deaths and hospitalizations in some Midwest states is being offset by “significant deterioration” along both coasts, the Sunbelt region, and Tennessee, Ohio and Indiana.
