Each year Independence Day is celebrated with barbecues, pool parties, fireworks and more. But many donât realize that our fun festivities may be traumatic for our furry friends. Many animals get scared and overwhelmed by the crowds and loud noises, causing them to enter âfight or flightâ mode.
Nearly one-in-five lost pets first go missing after being scared by the sound of fireworks, thunderstorms or other loud noises, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. With fireworks being such a prevalent part of July fourth celebrations, more animals go missing during this holiday than any other part of the year.
Building on this summer’s “Tails to Tales” reading challenge, the Johnson City Public Library will hold a pet adoption event along with the Humane Society of Washington County.

What: Summer Reading is an annual nationwide program in which participants register and set reading goals for themselves. Then they spend the summer tracking their progress, winning prizes and attending events.
The program is divided into age divisions: preschoolers, school-age children, teens and adults. This yearâs Summer Reading theme is âTails to Tales,â so reading challenges and events for all the age divisions focus on animal-themed topics. Events range from programs with Bays Mountain to a pet adoption with the Humane Society of Washington County.
