WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW), along with Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Richard Burr (R-N.C.), introduced the Big Cat Public Safety Act to protect public safety and improve animal welfare. This bipartisan, bicameral legislation prohibits the ownership of big cats like lions and tigers and makes it illegal for exhibitors to allow public contact with cubs.
“I’m pleased to join Senators Blumenthal, Burr, and Collins in introducing the Big Cat Public Safety Act to address the treatment of privately owned tigers and other big cats in our country,” said Chairman Carper.
One Year After âTiger King,â Bill Aims to Protect Big Cats
The Big Cat Public Safety Act has been introduced before, but a bipartisan group of lawmakers hopes the public outcry from the Netflix documentary series will finally help it become law.

The former roadside zoo owner known as Joe Exotic, Joseph Maldonado-Passage, remains in prison. The animal rights activist he was convicted of trying to kill, Carole Baskin, was given control of his old zoo in Oklahoma.
A group of four bipartisan lawmakers on Tuesday introduced legislation that would ban private big-cat ownership, inspired by Netflix s infamous Tiger King documentary series.
Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.; Susan Collins, R-Maine; Tom Carper, D-Del.; and Richard Burr, R-N.C., announced the Big Cat Public Safety Act to protect public safety and animal welfare, according to a press release. This bipartisan measure would help stop exploitation of big cats like tigers and lions, and reduce safety risks, Blumenthal, who authored the bill, said in a Tuesday statement. My Big Cat Public Safety Act would prohibit private ownership of these beautiful but powerful predators, which deserve to live in the wild.
