FHSU, City of Hays celebrate 2021 Arbor Day

The City of Hays and Fort Hays State University will celebrate Arbor Day 2021 on Thursday, April 22 at noon on the FHSU Quad.
“Arbor Day is a time for people to come together and better our community by planting a tree and providing children from Wilson Elementary’s second grade class the opportunity to learn more about Arbor Day, said Teresa L. Clounch, chair of the FHSU Tree Campus Committee. After a year off, we look forward to gathering on the FHSU Quad, west of Picken Hall, for this year s event.
The city of Santa Clarita’s annual Earth Arbor Day celebration is set to go virtual this year with the release of an entertaining and informative video program on Thursday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m.
The program will feature a comprehensive set of speakers including the Santa Clarita City Council; members from Urban Forestry; and Hike, Bike and Green Santa Clarita.
The program will detail the importance of local environmental awareness in addition to providing helpful tips for tree planting, pruning, recycling, pesticide pollution prevention and much more.
After the virtual premiere, residents are encouraged to visit the lower parking lot of The Centre at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway where City staff will hand out free bags of mulch on Saturday, April 24 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The City of Washington was recently awarded for their dedication to the importance of trees in its community.
The annual Urban Forestry Awards which was held virtually earlier this month presented a Tree City USA Award and Tree City USA Growth Award to Washington on behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. To qualify for a Tree City USA Award, a city must either have a city forester or an active tree board, have a tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita annually for its community forestry program, and have a tree planting and maintenance plan. To qualify for the growth award, cities must provide education and public relations, partnerships, planning and management, and tree planting and maintenance in their community. Washington has had the Tree City USA designation for over 30 years, and they plan to have their annual tree giveaway at 8 a.m. May 15th at the Washington County Fairgrounds.

Some local communities have again received a Tree City USA designation for their work in promoting and caring for trees.
The cities of Brighton, Howell, South Lyon, and the Villages of Dexter and Milford are among 124 Michigan communities, nine campuses, one healthcare institution, and one utility recognized with a Tree City, Tree Campus, Tree Campus Healthcare, or Tree Line USA designation. The Tree City USA programs promote proper care and management of community trees and call attention to the multiple benefits they provide.
The certifications are for work accomplished during 2020 and all recipients will receive their awards in April.
