CARLINVILLE “Make Carlinville Beautiful” (MCB) has been nominated for a Governor’s Hometown Award.
Mayor Mayor Sarah Oswald submitted to nomination last month.
“Our community is fortunate to have numerous volunteer organizations working for the betterment of the community and for those less fortunate,” said Oswald. “One organization that has captured the spirit of what it means to be a citizen of Carlinville is ‘Make Carlinville Beautiful.’ What started as a way for a family to grieve the loss of their son has since grown into a community-wide effort to beautify Carlinville and serves as an example for how small, rural communities can make a difference.”
ANGOLA â The Arbor Day Foundation has named Angola a 2020 Tree City USA in recognition of the cityâs commitment to effective urban forest management.
This is the 32nd consecutive year Angola has received the distinction, the third-longest streak in the state of Indiana.
Only two other Hoosier cities have longer active streaks: Bloomington, which has claimed the title for 37 straight years, and Indianapolis, now 33 years in a row.
Fremont also was named a Tree City for the 16th year in a row.
Angola was notified that its 2020 Tree City USA application was accepted on Feb. 15, according to an email from the Arbor Day Foundation provided by Angola Parks and Recreation Superintendent Matt Hanna, informing the city of its status.

NORWAY The Norway City Council on Monday had a second reading of an ordinance to opt into the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act.
While the state in 2018 approved allowing recreational marijuana sales, Norway citizens voted against the move, 641 no to 541 yes. The council cited that opposition in passing an ordinance in December 2018 to forbid marijuana businesses in Norway.
But the council revisited its decision Dec. 7, with Mayor Candy Brew, council members Jeff Muraro, Scott Popp and then-Council Member Jeremy Oja voting to amend.
The council on Monday set a workshop meeting for today to discuss details of the ordinance before a public hearing March 15.
March 5th is Arbor Day in Tennessee
March 5, 2021
Gov. Bill Lee has proclaimed March 5 as Arbor Day in Tennessee to recognize the importance of planting and maintaining trees in our state. This year’s state celebration will be held in Winchester, which is celebrating its first year as Tree City USA.
“I admire all Tree City USA communities, but this year’s distinction holds a special place in my heart since Winchester is my hometown,” State Forester David Arnold said. “Our state Arbor Celebration is a reminder of the value of trees in small communities and in large cities. Our partnerships with local governments, tree care advocates, and the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council help us strengthen urban environments through planting and management of trees.”
