Oregon lawmaker accused of unlocking state Capitol door for protesters faces misdemeanor charges
An Oregon state lawmaker accused of allowing protesters into the closed state Capitol building while lawmakers were debating Covid-19 restrictions is now facing two misdemeanor charges.
Republican Rep. Mike Nearman was charged Friday with first-degree official misconduct and second-degree criminal trespass, according to court records.
A charging document obtained by Oregon Public Broadcasting accuses Nearman of “unlawfully and knowingly perform(ing) an act which constituted an unauthorized exercise of his official duties, with intent to obtain a benefit or to harm another.”
According to court records, Nearman is due to be arraigned on May 11.

The charges were filed Friday by the Marion County District Attorneyâs Office. Both alleged offenses stem from an incident that occurred last Dec. 21, when protesters entered the Oregon State Capitol. Nearman, a Republican who represents House District 23, was seen on video opening a side door at the Capitol to admit the protesters.

Eleven candidates are running for the Salem-Keizer school board this spring.
Four of the board s seven seats are in the race Zone 1 in west Salem, currently represented by Kathy Goss; Zone 3 in south-central Salem, held by Sheronne Blasi; Zone 5 in east Salem, represented by Jesse Lippold Peone; and Zone 7 in north Salem, held by Paul Kyllo. Lippold Peone is the only incumbent running.
Election day is May 18; those elected will begin their positions on July 1.
School board member Marty Heyen of Zone 2 in northeast Salem, chairman Satya Chandragiri of Zone 4 in south Salem, and vice chairwoman Danielle Bethell of Zone 6 in Keizer were elected in 2019. Their terms will end in 2023.
