Alleged arson fire near Salem airport results in $1 million in damage

Salem Statesman Journal A man living at a Salem park faces arson and criminal mischief charges after allegedly firing a flare gun that ignited a storage facility near the Salem Municipal Airport Monday resulting in about $3 million in damages.  Salem and Marion County Fire District #1 firefighters responded to a report of a large fire around 6 p.m. at the Airport Self Storage, 2142 Turner Road SE. Aumsville firefighters were also initially dispatched but later recalled. Authorities said the four-alarm fire burned for several hours and destroyed an estimated 25 storage units.  There were no injuries reported, though approximately 189 individual storage renters lost belongings in the fire, according to a probable cause statement. 

Rep Nearman charged in Capitol protest incident

Oregon Rep. Mike Nearman has been charged with official misconduct in the first degree and criminal trespass in the second degrees. The charges were filed Friday by the Marion County District Attorney’s Office. Both alleged offenses stem from an incident that occurred last Dec. 21, when protesters entered the Oregon State Capitol. Nearman, a Republican who represents House District 23, was seen on video opening a side door at the Capitol to admit the protesters. A Salem man was formally charged Friday for allegedly sexually abusing several children, according to the Salem Police Department.  Luis Fernando Del Rio Jr., 35, has been charged with six counts of first-degree sexual abuse and four counts of first-degree sodomy. He was arraigned at the Marion County Circuit Court Annex, where his bail was set at $500,000.
