Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez reiterated the commitment of the Transition and Emergency Government to ensure that women s rights are protected, thus highlighting their role in strengthening democracy.
Remarks were made during a ceremony at the Government Palace to mark the unveiling of the bust of Maria Jesus Alvarado, who is considered a pioneer in the fight for women s rights in Peru. The Transition and Emergency Government is committed to this, and we are confident that the role of women in strengthening democracy will be reclaimed in the critical context that we are experiencing, Bermudez expressed. In 1911, when women were not even considered citizens, she (Alvarado) gave a speech about feminism, and put forward principles that remain challenges today: women s right to education, to access to public service, to vote, and to equality at home, she said.
