4 months ago in Local Photo: Saga Communications SPRINGFIELD As one of the state’s Regional Hospital Coordinating Centers (RHCC), HSHS St. John’s Hospital received Region 3’s vaccine allocation and administered the first COVID-19 vaccine doses to hospital colleagues today. Representatives from four of the region’s 18 counties picked up their allocations as well as Memorial Health System. Illinois has received its first shipment of Pfizer vaccines

Calling it a momentous occasion, not just this year, but in American history, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced the first shipment of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine in the state. About 43,000 doses are in the first shipment with additional shipments in the coming weeks. The shipment is roughly half of the statewide allocation for the first round, excluding Chicago, Pritzker said Monday. Pritzker said the first vaccinations will be given Tuesday. Federal regulators approved the vaccine for emergency use late last week. The announcement comes on a day when the Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed 7,214 new and probable cases of COVID-19 and 103 additional deaths, bringing the total number of known infections in the state to 856,118.

Springfield region prepares for COVID-19 vaccines with ultra-cold freezer

A 6½-foot-tall freezer delivered by the state to Springfield’s HSHS St. John’s Hospital in recent days will make history in the fight against COVID-19. The “ultra-deep freeze” unit, now plugged in along a wall of the internal pharmacy at the 422-bed nonprofit hospital, will be used to store the first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine proven 95% effective in a pandemic that has sickened millions and killed more than 290,000 Americans and almost 14,000 in Illinois. St. John’s is one of 10 regional hospitals that will coordinate distribution of the initial vaccine shipments to local health departments, contractors, and others administering shots to frontline health care workers and nursing home residents as soon as the week of Dec. 13. The Peoria region is being coordinated by OSF HealthCare, who declined the Journal Star s request for access to the site due to security concerns.
