NARRAGANSETT-SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will once again sponsor National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this weekend, encouraging Rhode Islanders to safely dispose of unwanted or expired medications.
Collections will be held at 565 sites around the region from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. For most Rhode Island communities, the closest site will be the local police department. Visit the DEA s website or call 800-882-9539 to find the closest site.
Both the Narragansett and South Kingstown police departments will serve as collection sites, located at 40 Caswell St. and 1790 Kingstown Rd., respectively.

Law enforcement officers at locations across the state will be collecting unused medications for safe disposal on April 24.
Included in the effort will be the Harvey County Sheriff s Office, 120 E. Seventh Street. Prescription drugs will be collected from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 24.
The collection events are part of a nationwide effort to dispose of leftover medications to prevent accidental or intentional misuse. Since the Drug Take-Back Day program began in 2010, more than 101 tons of unwanted medications have been collected and destroyed in Kansas alone.
“Unused medications are dangerous for kids, pets and the environment,” said Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt. “Diversion of opioid painkillers, in particular, can contribute to the misuse of these drugs that has become a serious nationwide problem. The Caddo Sheriff’s Office will be hosting Drug Take Back Day at Sheriff’s Safety Town on Saturday.
Drug Take Back Day allows citizens to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs. The Sheriff’s office will be working with the Drug Enforcement Administration and will be collecting old, unwanted, and expired pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications.
The event will start at 10 a.m. and will end at 2 p.m. at 8910 Jewella Avenue.
“Visiting a Drug Take Back location like the one we provide at Sheriff’s Safety Town is a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of prescription drugs that keeps medications out of the wrong hands and helps eliminate the potential for abuse,” Prator said.
And, it is.
But it s also the amount Richmond Police Department needs to collect April 24 during the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to surpass 10 tons of drugs collected in less than nine years.
That s 20,000 pounds, and that truly is a lot.

RPD will be collecting unwanted and unused pills and other medications from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, outside the police department entrance at the Richmond Municipal Building, 50 N. Fifth St. Participants can pull up on the west side of the building and officers will come to their vehicle.
