Federal health secretary visits SZABMU

Daily Times Federal Secretary Health Aamir Ashraf Khwaja visited Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU), PIMS. He was briefed by Prof. Dr. Tanwir Khaliq, Vice Chancellor, that SZABMU is the public sector university in Islamabad to become a DRAP approved site for Phase III clinical trials of Covid-19 vaccine. SZABMU-PIMS is now becoming a part of a multicentre phase III study for COVID-19 vaccine ZF2001. These trials have been approved by National Bioethics Committee (NBC) Pakistan and Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP). Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, medical researchers all over the world are rushing into the research and development of vaccines. ZF2001 vaccine is co-developed by The Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS) and Anhui Zhifei Longcom Biopharmaceutical Co., Ltd. He tweets @drkhalidshab Prescription slips will now bear generic names of medicines instead of the previously used company names. This has recently been directed by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP). Every medicine has a generic or salt name which is the active ingredient and a brand name which is given by the production company. In medical school, students are made to memorise generic names and as they enter their postgraduate years they have to add a new memory chip into their heads holding multiple brand names of the same drug which are then prescribed to patients. Now, a new U-turn has taken us down the memory lane back to generic names. Why is DRAP juggling between generic and company names? Is it in true drug regulatory spirit or a new power game?
