$20 8M expansion of Mayes, Hyde Park Elementary Schools in Denison continues

DISD expected to cancel uncontested elections

DISD expected to cancel uncontested elections Herald Democrat The Denison Independent School District will likely cancel its May election due to uncontested races, district officials said this week. Only two candidates filed to run in the May 1 elections, which would have seen two seats up for vote, by the deadline late last week. With the filing period completed, the board will see one new face this spring when Shelle Cassell takes over the seat for Ward 6, replacing Ken Altnether. District officials previously said Altnether expressed that he was not planning to run for election. The Ward 3 seat will be retained by Bob Rhoden, who was the sole candidate to file for the race.

Texoma students will return to the classroom for 2021 STAAR

Texoma students will return to the classroom for 2021 STAAR Herald Democrat The Texas Education Agency recently released guidance to districts, who will be required to administer the STAAR test in-person this year in spite of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and Texoma schools are taking steps to ensure students are safe when they take standardized tests on campus this spring. This will mark the first time that the STAAR test has been administered since 2019. The requirement for the annual test was waived last year during the early days of the pandemic. With COVID, everyone is navigating and trying to make decisions without prematurely making decisions. Everyone is just navigating, said Regina Prigge, Denison Independent School District director of assessment and special programs.
