Fischer: Reimagining Louisville public safety requires entire city

View Comments In Louisville and across America, there is a widespread realization that it is well past time for us to reimagine public safety. While acknowledging that our police officers perform a difficult, dangerous and essential job, we also must recognize that public safety is more than we can realistically expect the police to create alone. This means that to fully answer the calls for racial justice and equity following the tragic deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and far too many others, we must, as a society, take more responsibility for creating the conditions necessary for public safety in every neighborhood. This was a resounding theme in a two-day national summit on Reimagining Public Safety that I led May 18-19 in my role as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Daniel Biss. Incoming Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss announced this afternoon that he’s appointing a 17-member Reimagining Public Safety Committee. Biss says the committee “will conduct a holistic, data-driven analysis of everything we do to provide for public safety and make community-informed recommendations in time to be incorporated into the 2022 City budget.” He says the committee members “bring a broad variety of perspectives and experiences, and while I have no illusions that it will be easy (or necessary!) to establish a consensus on all issues, I’m confident that we’ll have significant and constructive discussions that will move our City forward.”

IPD, Sheriff s Office change SWAT name, repaint truck

Stemming from public input, feedback from focus groups and conversations with community members, the Ithaca Police Department and Tompkins Countty Sheriff’s Office have announced a handful of changes to the joint-jurisdictional teams, SWAT and CINT.  Both SWAT (special weapons and tactics team) and CINT (critical incident negotiations team) were born out of the death of IPD investigator Michael Padula in 1996 with the goal of being better prepared for a similar incident in the future. However, throughout the Reimagining Public Safety the SWAT truck in particular was brought up repeatedly when talking about militarization of police. According to a joint press release from IPD and the Sheriff’s Office, the below changes “continue on the path of evolving with best practices, as well as making sure our mission, image and values align with our communities’ expectations.”
