Accomplishments and Contributions Highlighted by Black History Month

February is Black History Month and an educator on Vancouver Island says it’s a great opportunity to increase awareness about the contributions of African Americans to British Columbia and to encourage greater acceptance of the diversity in our communities.
Dionte Jelks is the principal at Ladysmith Intermediate School and came to the Island from the United States.
His students often ask questions about what it was like to grow up as a black kid in one of America’s poorest neighbourhoods of Chicago.

This Black History Month, Hulu is showcasing Black voices, stories and creators, both on and off the platform, through content launches, a first of its kind virtual concert, and monetary donations to non-profit organizations committed to advancing social justice. To help create a meaningful framework for the Black experience through storytelling, Hulu has also committed to amplifying Black voices – and not just during February.

At the 2021 Sundance Film Festival today, the beneficiaries of $70,000 in grants from Sundance Institute and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation were named.
Doron Weber, Vice President and Program Director at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, presented the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize to Son of Monarchs and announced the new winners: Tania Taiwo for Pharmacopeia (Sundance Institute | Sloan Commissioning Grant); Alyssa Loh for Chariot (Sundance Institute | Sloan Development Fellowship); and Jennifer Lee and Graham Sack for The Harvard Computers (Sundance Institute | Sloan Episodic Fellowship). Alexis Gambis s Son of Monarchs will receive a $20,000 check as part of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Feature Film Prize, as previously announced.

The climate crisis was front and center Wednesday at the White House.
With the “all of government approach,” the Biden administration is issuing executive actions targeting the revitalization of the U.S. energy sector; conserving our natural resources and leveraging them to help drive our nation toward a clean energy future, creating well-paying jobs with the opportunity to join a union, and delivering justice for communities who have been subjected to environmental harm.
