A century-old, cast iron statue of the Virgin Mary that once provided inspiration to Roman Catholic worshipers at Immaculate Conception Church now stands as the artistic and spiritual centerpiece of the newly christened Piazza Maria, just a few blocks away from her former home in Johnstown’s Cambria City neighborhood.
It was installed two weeks ago by Stella Property Development & Event Production, a company owned by Steven Biter and Chad Pysher, who are working to repurpose elements of the community’s ethnic and religious history in modern ways.

With its latest report on the clergy abuse crisis, the Catholic Diocese of Erie said it has spent more than $31 million compensating victims and survivors and investigating cases.
Whether the financial reckoning continues, and whether the 13-county diocese will have to consider bankruptcy as a result, depends largely on how the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rules on a clergy abuse case that originated in the Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.

Survivors of child sex abuse in Pennsylvania have for years endured setback and failures in their efforts to reform state law to allow them a path to justice. Now, the commonwealth, which is close yet again to passing reform legislation, could set precedence with regards to how legislation and legal cases stack up for victims. Victims earlier this month rallied at the Capitol to call on lawmakers to pass the pending legislation.

In Youngstown, Ohio, a large portrait of St. Therese of Lisieux, a French Catholic Discalced Carmelite nun, hung in the bedroom of Joseph and Mary Tokasz Ferenchak. Today, the same portrait provides solace to their daughter, Theresa Ann, now known as Carmelite Sister M. Joachim Anne Ferenchak, administrator and CEO of Garvey Manor and Our Lady of the Alleghenies Residence.
Sister Joachim is overseeing Garvey’s second major expansion during her 24-year tenure at the Hollidaysburg home.
