MSCE exams 60% fail rate worst in the past decade says education minister | Malawi Nyasa Times

April 2, 2021 Wanga Gwede - Nyasa Times 3 Comments Minister of Education Agnes NyaLonje  has admitted that the results of the retaken 2020 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examination which show that 81 017 candidates out of 138 310 have failed, representing a paltry 41.42 percent pass rate and described it as “the worst in the past decade”. Minister of Education Agness Nyalonje speaks during the announcement of 2020 MSCE results in Lilongwe-pic by Lisa Kadango Acting executive director Dr Dorothy Nampota said the re-administered 2020 examination were free from leakage and were conducted under strict adherence to Covid-19 preventive measures. Nampota said out of the 138 310 candidates that sat examinations, 57 293 have passed representing 41.42% pass rate.

Shocking: Nearly 58% Fail MSCE Exams

Out of 138,310 candidates that sat for the examinations, 57,293 candidates have passed. Minister of Education Agnes NyaLonje said the 2020 MSCE exams pass rate is the lowest in over a decade. NyaLonje says this is the first time Malawi has administered a cheat-free and leakage-free examination. The Minister attributed the low pass rate to the Covid-19 pandemic which caused schools to close and the shifting of the exams date due to Covid-19 and the exams leakages last year. The Minister further said that lack of schooling materials, insufficient science laboratories and libraries and shortage of teachers continues to affect the pass rate in the national exams.

Maneb extends registration period for 2021 as parents urge timey release of exams

March 11, 2021 Nyasa Times Reporter 2 Comments The Malawi National Examinations Board ( MANEB) has extended the  registration of candidates and payment of examination fees for 2021 Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education ( PSLCE), Junior Certificate of Education( JCE) and Malawi School Certificate of Education( MSCE) examination to 8th April 2021. According to a MANEB statement, the extension is in response to the revised school calendar. Leadership of the Independent Schools Association of Malawi, (ISAMA) president, Joseph Patel, said the extension was a welcome idea. He ,however, said they are hopeful that examinations will be out before April 8th,2021. “Am hopeful that examinations  will be out as Maneb was finalising on marking. The extension is just okay over one month. The period will give time to parents to find examination fees. We thank the government for making the extension,” he said.
