Boasting some of the Bay of Plenty s best views, it s not surprising that Te Rae o Pāpāmoa visitor numbers have skyrocketed.
It s also one of the most significant cultural and archaeological landscapes in New Zealand and a much-needed upgrade is well under way. This project at Pāpāmoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park is one that s been talked about for a long time, Pim de Monchy from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council said.

Concept plans to upgrade one of New Zealand s most significant cultural landscapes by honouring and highlighting its Māori history will now go ahead. The proposed upgrade of Pāpāmoa Hills Regional Park was heard at a Bay of Plenty Regional Council Monitoring and Operations Committee today. The park is proposed to become Te Rae o Pāpāmoa, or Pāpāmoa Hills Cultural Regional Park.
The meeting heard that regional council staff had worked with representatives from Waitaha, Ngā Pōtiki, Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāti He and others on the project s vision: to create a sustainable and rich experience at Te Rae o Pāpāmoa / Pāpāmoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park for locals and visitors to enjoy.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council today approved the concept
design stage of a major upgrade for Te Rae o Pāpāmoa /
Pāpāmoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park. The
improvements will create a richer experience for visitors
through construction of a new 86 space carpark, upgraded
amenities and new provision for the sharing of cultural
stories.

Manager commented that the Regional Park has become
increasingly popular with both locals and
visitors.
“Over 106,000 people visited the park last
year, representing a steady 10% per annum increase in
numbers over the last several years.
