Simsbury Voters To Decide Fate Of Historic MLK Site

Joe Amon / Connecticut Public A multimillion dollar land deal goes before voters in Simsbury on May 4 that asks residents to authorize more than $2.5 million in taxpayer money for the purchase of nearly 300 acres of land, including a spot where Martin Luther King Jr. once worked.  If voters approve the deal, some of the land called “Meadowood” would be kept as working farmland and used for recreation. The deal also would have historical goals: preserving some old barns and housing an exhibit about Martin Luther King Jr., who worked on those old tobacco fields as a teenager for two summers in the 1940s. 

Rep Sean Patrick Maloney backs renewal of the Highlands Conservation Act

FORT MONTGOMERY Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney announced Friday he has introduced legislation to reauthorize the Highlands Conservation Act during an appearance at the Fort Montgomery State Historic Site. The act protects critical conservation areas in the Mid-Atlantic Highlands region, which includes parts of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut. Since 2007, $70 million in funding has been awarded to the four states through the act s grants program, including $20 million to New York. Senators, including Kirsten Gilibrand of New York, Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, introduced companion legislation in the Senate. We are stewards of the Hudson Valley s environment, and it s our job to preserve New York s great outdoors for our kids and grandkids to enjoy for generations to come, Maloney said.
