CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. Search and rescue crews have found a 71-year-old missing hiker alive, officials said Monday morning.
Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Search and Rescue teams were searching for Joseph (Joe) Dean near the Horsetail Falls trail system since Saturday. Dean had been expected to return on Saturday. Officials said he sent his wife a text message saying that he was lost somewhere on the Rock of Ages Trail.

Members of a search-and-rescue team transport 71-year-old Joe Dean on a stretcher after he was found in the Columbia River Gorge. Dean had gone missing while hiking on Saturday afternoon and was found early Monday morning.

Searchers on Monday found a 71-year-old Portland man missing in the Columbia River Gorge since Saturday night and carried him down Horsetail Falls Trail in a special basket to reunite him with his family.
Joe Dean went to a hospital for medical evaluation but was talking and able to walk with help, rescuers said.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who hiked around Horsetail Falls or the Rock of the Ages Ridge trail in the Columbia Gorge on Saturday to report if they saw a 71-year-old man who is lost in the area.
As of 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Joseph Edward Dean was still missing. Search efforts will continue through Sunday night. Additional resources will be deployed Monday to continue the search.
