Montclair HS Students Stand Together Against Bank-Funded Pipeline

April 23, 2021 at 2:46 AM MONTCLAIR, NJ - High school students and others gathered Thursday to protest big banks for funding the Line 3 oil pipeline in honor of Earth Day.    After construction, the Line 3 pipeline will carry tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada across Minnesota to Superior, Wisconsin. The project would cross treaty land of the Anishinaabe, where the group of Indigenous tribes retain the right to hunt, fish and gather.   Maddie Hedgepeth, a junior at Montclair High, helped organize the protest that started on the corner of South Fullerton and Bloomfield Avenue and moved to the Chase and TD Bank downtown. She is a member of the Sunrise Movement, a group that seeks to prioritize climate change as an issue in the U.S. Maddie joined a Sunrise chapter at MHS about two years ago, until the group split from the high school.
