I’m sure most of us know the ancient parable that the fox knows many small things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing. Well, here’s today’s variant: the brontosaur ignores many small things, but the ostrich ignores one big thing. In the business and financial context, the one big thing is climate change – and the ostriches are businesses that may be on their way to extinction because of their reluctance to face it. A strategy paper from MFS titled “Sustainability Isn’t Free” warns that “efforts to become more sustainable will challenge many companies and perhaps even bankrupt some of them”. It says this runs counter to the commonly held view that “the increasing focus on corporate sustainability is the ultimate win-win”, with improvements in productivity and corporate morale coming on top of lower costs.

In March, President Joe Biden appointed Wright to his White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council.  Wright, the founder of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, is joined on the council by Jade Begay of the Indigenous Environmental Network, who co-wrote a 2018 op-ed in EcoWatch contending that climate change is “colonialism” and “cultural genocide.”
