As the classroom reopens, parents are divided on how the district handled the outbreak. Some are full of distrust, while others say their confidence has increased. After the outbreak, the district inspected the classroom’s ventilation system and found faulty ductwork. Only 30% of the maximum amount of fresh air was entering the room.

Eight students tested positive for coronavirus at the school. “We hadn’t seen an outbreak like this in a single classroom,” Lower Merion school district spokesperson Amy Buckman said. Buckman said the second grade class was quarantined while the rest of the school remained opened as officials tried to figure out what happened.

LOWER MERION Lower Merion School District officials are reporting that faulty HVAC equipment might have contributed to eight students and two vaccinated family members contracting the COVID virus. According to district officials, eight students in one second-grade classroom and two vaccinated family members at Penn Valley Elementary School have tested positive for the COVID virus.
