For three years while at Barnstable High School, Sandwich resident Ellen T. Brown, 32, took a food training class through which, for extra credit, she volunteered to make meals for the homeless at the Noah Homeless Shelter in Hyannis.
This experience, she said, engendered a lifelong passion to get involved, and to realize that she could make a positive difference in peopleâs lives.
âMy main passion is trying to lead by example whenever I think I can help,â Ms. Brown said during a recent interview at a local coffee shop.
A graduate of Barnstable High School and Cape Cod Community College, Ms. Brown is also a veteran of the United States Air Force, where she taught nutrition.

As the pandemic continues on, the number of families lacking access to healthy food is increasing.
According to the organization Project Bread, the number of families who are food insecure in the state has doubled. For Black and Latino residents, that rate is higher.
Project Bread president and CEO Erin McAleer said there are many factors that lead to food insecurity. Many food insecure families aren t aware they can pull themselves out of it through help from the federal government, she said, and surveys show that benefits like SNAP are drastically underutilized in Massachusetts.

Food4Vets pickup Saturday at BHS
Barnstable High School parking lot will serve as the new distribution site for Food4Vets family food pickup on Saturdays going forward.
Having met with Town Manager Mark Ells and BPS Supt. Meg Mayo-Brown, Rep. Kipp Diggs (D-Hyannis) made the announcement by phone Monday, saying volunteers are committed to extending availability of critical emergency food supplies.
The Massachusetts Military Support Foundation partnered with 4Cs West Barnstable campus to launch the initiative last fall. The drive-thru pickup then moved to the Hyannis Transportation Center, which is about to get really busy as the Cape Cod RTA ramps up summer service, Diggs said.
