Latinas 413: ¿Para qué sufrir si no hace falta? | Arts And Culture

On a cold Tuesday evening, in a tidy Pittsfield apartment she shares with her two children, Laura Cabrera begins her weekly singing lessons with her teacher, a man 5,600 miles away in Argentina. The song this evening, Mexican folk singer Natalia Lafourcade’s “Para Qué Sufrir,” could well serve as an anthem for Cabrera and a group of Berkshire women who, in the past year, have resolved to open doors and ease others’ agony. “Para Qué Sufrir.” Translation: “Why Suffer.” “¿Para qué sufrir si no hace falta?” Cabrera sings as her instructor listens in via Zoom. Translation: Why suffer if you don’t have to?

The Doll House the CIA Built | Dissident Voice

Review of Seeking Truth in a Country of Lies by Edward Curtin by Ray McGinnis / February 24th, 2021 American news these past few decades has been an almost constant non-stop spectacle of shock and awe. Breaking news is emotionally gripping, often disorienting, a 24/7 drama without rest. Key talking points are relentlessly asserted. And with each passing year news commentators grow ever more certain of their talking points, with no sense that dissenting points of view have any merit, or in some cases even exist. One person throwing out an anchor in these turbulent times is Ed Curtin and his book

North Adams Mayor Tom Bernard will not seek a third term

NORTH ADAMS — Mayor Tom Bernard has announced that he will not seek reelection to a third term this year. Bernard, who first was elected in 2017, said Tuesday he wants to focus on running the city and managing the pandemic rather than conducting a reelection campaign. “It’s become clear for me we have really big, important work to do in the city over the next few months,” he told The Eagle. “Things I had really wanted to be at the top of my agenda in 2020, I can point to reasons why they didn’t get done, but the fact is, they didn’t get done.”

During pandemic, finding subs a challenge for SVSU

Don t miss the big stories. Like us on Facebook.   BENNINGTON — Getting substitute teachers can be tough any time, but during a pandemic, the task becomes that much more difficult. With different health protocols in place and concerns about the transmissible nature of the coronavirus, the number of available substitutes that have the credentials to fill in on a daily basis are way down. “Usually we advertise through our website or the Banner and on our social media,” said Gloria Cahill, the human resources coordinator at the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union. “We put it out there that we need subs for teachers, paraprofessionals, nurses, custodians and office staff. We’re always looking for subs, so we put in an ad every month and a half or so.”
