West Nile virus detected in Burlington, mosquito spraying begins

Wicked Local Spraying for mosquitos has begun in Burlington this week, after an announcement that West Nile virus had been detected locally late last month. According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, WNV was detected in mosquitoes collected in Burlington July 27. The virus, which can cause fever and flu-like symptoms, is most commonly transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.  Truck-mounted spraying is scheduled to begin Aug. 3 through the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project, between dusk and 11:30 p.m., in the vicinity of Lexington Street, Pleasant Street, Partridge Lane, Glendale Road and Eugene Road. Spraying will also occur on Wilmington Road, Drake Road, Hart Street, Sarah Street, Sandra Avenue, Irene Street, and Phyllis Avenue.

COVID mask updates in New England after CDC guidelines change

Massachusetts On July 30, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health issued a new mask advisory in light of the CDC s guidance. The state is advising fully vaccinated individuals to wear a mask or face covering when indoors if they have a weakened immune system, are at increased risk for severe disease, or have a vulnerable or unvaccinated family member.  Masks remain mandated nationally in all public and private transportation systems, in healthcare facilities, and settings hosting vulnerable populations.  Rhode Island Last week, Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee said he would wait to evaluate the CDC s new guidance before imposing any new advisories.
