Mayor Donna Holaday, Director of Public Health Frank Giacalone and the city of Newburyport are urging residents to remain vigilant against the spread of COVID-19 as the community maintains a “moderate” risk designation from the state.
Holaday also issued a video update regarding the state of the pandemic, which can be viewed at https://bit.ly/3sHgpfe.
According to public health data released Jan. 14, the city s designation has remained “yellow,” indicating a “moderate risk” of spread in the community. The average daily incidence rate for the city of Newburyport is 52.3 per 100,000 residents, up from 43 last week.
The report, which includes the latest data up until Jan. 12, states there have been 130 cases of COVID-19 in the community over the last 14 days. Newburyport officials report as of yesterday have been a total of 763 confirmed cases in the city since the start of the pandemic.

Hingham reported new COVID-19 in the triple digits for the third week in a row, but moved back into the state s yellow zone for COVID-19 transmission.
On Thursday, Jan. 21, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health updated its town-by-town case data to show Hingham has now seen 1,242 coronavirus cases since the pandemic began last year, 109 more than last week s reported total. Last week, the town saw 128 newly reported cases.
The town s two-week daily incident rate is to down from 70.8 cases per 100,000 residents last week to 64.0 cases, and the positivity rate for tests performed over the past two weeks is now 4.50%, down from 5.37% last week.

Island schools look to address racism through education
Martha’s Vineyard Diversity Coalition suggests several diversity, equity, and inclusion resources for staff and students.
Borders to Bridges is just one of the multitude of racial literacy programs suggested to Island public schools by the Martha’s Vineyard Diversity Coalition during an All-Island School Committee meeting Thursday.
The Martha’s Vineyard Public School (MVPS) system is working in collaboration with the Martha’s Vineyard Diversity Coalition (MVDC) to bring additional diversity, equity, and inclusion resources to staff and students.
In order to foster a positive learning environment for all students, members of the MVDC suggested several opportunities for both faculty and staff enrichment, along with curricula that promote openness and inclusivity, during an All-Island School Committee meeting Thursday.
