Basking sharks seen near Long Sands, Short Sands beaches in York, ME

YORK, Maine A group of boaters near Long Sands Beach recorded a large basking shark floating at the surface of the water Monday evening with a picturesque Nubble Lighthouse and purple sky as the backdrop. Taylor Phillips said she, Bill Hancock and Kerry Makambo were sailing about a mile out from the shore like they always do twice a week. Phillips and Hancock have worked together at the Ogunquit Lobster Pound for the past five years and have gone out boating together since. “We always hope to see something, but we never do,” Phillips said. That changed Monday, May 18, when the group spotted the shark while they were out on their boat. They later posted a video of the encounter on social media. Given the size of the boat, Phillips guessed the shark could have been about 20 feet in length.

The Coonamessett River Trust Is Clearing The Way For Herring To Run

The number of herring in Massachusetts has dropped dramatically since the 1970s. The Coonamessett River Trust is taking steps to help turn that around in Falmouth. “We’re trying to monitor and get some kind of idea of what the population of the herring is in the Coonamessett,” said Wendi B. Buesseler, president of the trust. Linda A. Deegan, senior scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Falmouth and a trust board member, said that in 2019 a total of 5,969 fish were counted in the Coonamessett River, which the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries estimated to be 60,000 total fish, down from its 2016 estimate of 81,000.

NMFS reports right whales increasing use of New England offshore wind areas

SHARE Confirmed North Atlantic right whales off Massachusetts and Rhode Island seen on survey flights or recorded by passive acoustic detectors, January-April 2021 with 730 sighting events and 183 acoustic detections. WhaleMap image via NOAA. Endangered northern right whales that have been arriving earlier in spring and staying longer around Cape Cod have also expanded their presence south and west of Nantucket Shoals, into areas planned for large-scale development of offshore wind power, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service. Scientists from the NMFS Northeast Fisheries Science Center conducting surveillance flights spotted 57 fight whales March 30 off southeast New England, in and around wind energy areas that have been leased to developers by the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
