ALTON More than 40 members of the Riverbend Pickleball Group came to Gordon Moore Park in Alton Saturday to celebrate Opening Day and the Inaugural Gherkin Tournament, a single-elimination tournament won by Mark and Paula Mathews of Godfrey. Pickleball is America’s fastest growing sport, with courts being added to RV parks and senior communities. The paddle sport combines facets of badminton, tennis and ping pong using a hollow ball similar in appearance to a Wiffle ball.
