David Colburn COOK- Soon-to-be North Woods School senior Jake Panichi, of Cook, isn’t known for taking any of his sporting exploits lightly. When it comes to baseball, a favorite sport, Panichi bears down with ferocity from the pitching mound, sprints and leaps with abandon in the outfield to turn sure hits into spectacular outs, and is nothing short of full throttle when running the bases. And when it comes to fishing, Panichi has waded in with the same focused intensity. His parents started taking him fishing when he was old enough to walk, Panichi said, and his grandfather, well-known guide Joe Panichi, has also been an inspiration and a mentor. But, it seems, there’s a catch, and it’s not one to toss in a live well.

(AP) With the opening of Minnesota s fishing season marked by the 73rd annual Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener on Otter Tail Lake, some aspects will look a lot like past years: Lots of media, visits by dignitaries and a chance for the local community to promote tourism. But anglers won’t have to make the drive to Otter Tail County to join this year’s festivities. They won’t even have to own a boat. All they need is a fishing rod and a smart phone.

Kadon and McKenna Strong recognized with Triple A award at SEHS

Sleepy Eye High School’s nominees for the Minnesota High School League Triple “A” Award are siblings, McKenna and Kadon Strong. The Triple “A” award recognizes and honors high school seniors who have excelled in academics, fine arts, and athletics. Triple “A” Award nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. McKenna and Kadon are now entered in the Sub-section Region 2A competition. UPDATE: Kadon is the sub-section 7 Triple A Award winner for 2021. All sub-section winners will now interview with the Region 2A selection committee to determine the Region 2A Male Triple A Award winner.    Both McKenna and Kadon are recognized as excellent high-achieving students, committed and successful athletes, top band musicians, and leaders in the school.
