Jailed journalist Siddique Kappan’s wife seeks Kerala CM’s intervention

Delhi-based Kerala Journalist Siddique Kappan’s wife, Raihanath Siddique, has asked chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s to intervene for the release of her husband who was jailed at Mathura following his arrest by the Uttar Pradesh police.
On October 5, Siddique Kappan along with three others were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police while they were on their way to Hathras to cover the alleged rape and murder of a Dalit Girl. He was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act alleging intentions to stoke communal tensions by the police.

The Mathura District and Sessions Judge has directed to transfer the case of Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan and three others, arrested and booked for sedition and under the UAPA, to the court of Additional District and Session Judge from the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, which was so far hearing the case and extending their judicial custody.

Family to stage dharna in Thiruvananthapuram in January Raihanath Siddique, wife of New Delhi-based Malayali journalist Siddique Kappan, has sought Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s intervention for her husband’s release. Mr. Kappan is in a Mathura jail at present after the Uttar Pradesh police booked him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on October 5 while he was on his way to report the rape and murder of a girl in Hathras.
She told the media here on Tuesday that the family would stage a dharna in Thiruvananthapuram in the first week of January, raising the demand. Ms. Siddique claimed that the U.P. government had tried to humiliate the Delhi unit of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), when it sought bail for him in the Supreme Court. Mr. Kappan is the secretary of the unit.
