Funding for the North Portland tiny home community may still be on the chopping block after all.
Confusion reigned at city hall late Thursday, Feb. 18, as Commissioner Dan Ryan and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler offered conflicting information on a long-running tiny home community s fate.
Ryan first announced an apparent about-face on Wheeler s behalf with the commissioner writing in a statement to the Tribune that Wheeler intends to provide services to Hazelnut Grove for another six months.
Almost as soon as that news broke, Wheeler s staff walked it back. I m told six months is not a firm timeline, mayoral spokesman Tim Becker said in a separate email to the Tribune as the after-office-hours uncertainty crested.

Since the legislative session began on Feb. 10, more than 700 bills have been introduced over the two chambers of the legislature. They range on a variety of topics, such as selling alcohol earlier on Sundays to eliminating the requirement that schools be closed on election days, as well as many topics in between.
Of course, only a handful of these pieces of legislation become law each year, but their presence alone is enough to warrant careful discussion on how they would impact everyday West Virginians.
Alternative homeless shelter providers sought
Portland and Multnomah County leaders are offering $3 million for new shelter options.
Portland and Multnomah County leaders want to expand sanctioned shelter options for the homeless to include a wider range of solutions, such as outdoor villages, safe vehicle parking programs, modular shelters and more.
The city-county Joint Office of Homeless Service began soliciting qualified operators for such alternatives on Wednesday, Feb. 17. Responses to the Request for Programmatic Qualifications or RFPQ for short must be submitted by March 9.
Anyone can apply, not just nonprofit organizations.

David Douglas cancels school Wednesday; others will resume
Amid widespread power outages, school districts and colleges canceled distance learning classes
UPDATE: David Douglas School District announced Tuesday evening, Feb. 16 that classes will be canceled Wednesday, Feb. 17 for the second day in a row.
School districts in Portland canceled classes Tuesday due to power outages throughout the region.
With power restored to some households Tuesday, Portland Public Schools and Parkrose School District both announced distance learning would resume Wednesday, Feb. 17. Parkrose will offer meal services, but PPS warned meal service will be impacted by power outages. Home deliveries 2 hours late, and pickup sites at Arleta, Bridger, Whitman & Woodmere closed, the district tweeted Tuesday.
