What’s a governor to do when two out of every five of their residents contract covid-19 thanks to a lack of lockdowns, virtually non-existent mask mandates, and $5 million federal relief funds allocated toward boosting tourism? Host a potential superspreader event and tweet the evidence, of course. That’s how South Dakota Governor and burgeoning GOP darling Kristi Noem does it, at least.

On Tuesday, Noem tweeted a photo featuring herself, her husband, and close to two dozen legislative pages huddled together on a staircase like a cursed sorority house photo.
“Love having our legislative pages over for dinner!” Noem wrote. “We could not get through the session without their help.”

The overwhelming economic consensus is that coal is out, renewables are in. Yet one company, associated with the Navajo Nation, doesn’t seem to have gotten the message and may be weighing the tribe down with more coal baggage as the rest of the country moves on.

A judge last week blocked the expansion of the Spring Creek Mine in Montana, ruling that the federal government needs to issue an updated environmental review to more closely examine the impacts of mining more coal in the region. The ruling marked the latest development in a years-long struggle over Spring Creek, the largest mine in the state.

Former Prineville resident Lonnie Sikes created and donated three scaled-down models of historic Prineville buildings to the Crook County Courthouse
An amazing and unusual display graces the second level of the Crook County Courthouse.
A scaled model of three historic and iconic buildings in Prineville are now on display for the public to view; the Bowman Museum, the Crook County Courthouse, and the old Bank Drug building across from Bowman Museum. That building is now owned by Tanny Staffordson and houses Edward Jones Investments.
Lonnie Sikes, a former Prineville resident, crafted the replicas from his home in Southern California. Upon completion, Sikes sent out a plea on Facebook to see if there would be any interested takers of the completed models. Crook County Commissioner Jerry Brummer saw the post on Facebook.

Annual festival brightens cloudy Portland nights; it ll light things up Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13.
The Portland Winter Light Festival had to evolve in its sixth year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and government safety restrictions. It s called the Portland Winter Light (non)Festival this year and includes a series of installations, video projections and more around Portland, in which spectators can be socially distanced.
Photographer Diego Diaz visited many of the sites with lights last weekend and documented them with the accompanying photos.
The largest concentration of installations are in downtown Portland, around Pioneer Courthouse Square. Around the city, lights will come on again this weekend, 6-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Feb. 12-13.

A 16-year-old Newberg High School student was among eight people killed in a July 5 plane crash over Lake Coeur d Alene in northern Idaho, with the tragedy sending emotional shockwaves in Newberg and throughout Oregon. Now, with the help of a Portland apparel company, the memory of Hayden Fredrickson lives on.
Portland Gear owner and creative director Marcus Harvey worked with the trio of Hayden Fredrickson s mother, best friend and girlfriend to create a clothing line based on designs Fredrickson made before his death. He d often expressed interest in designing a clothing brand and had tinkered with designs in the past.
