President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera says there’s a need for continued collective effort in sensitising Malawians on what needs to be done in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Dr Chakwera made the remarks on Wednesday at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre when he met the Public Affairs Committee(PAC). The President said Malawians still have unanswered questions on the COVID-19 pandemic and its vaccine. He then urged the faith leaders and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to civic educate the citizenry. Catholic Church in Malawi welcomes strides on Peace Commission establishment

Bishop Montfort Stima of Mangochi Diocese ECM head of communications commission Bishop Montfort Stima expressed optimism that the Commission a pivotal role in promoting peace and unity among Malawians in spite of their diversity in political, regional, ethnic and religious affiliations. Stima made the sentiments in a telephone interview soon after hosting the Minister of Civic Education and National Unity, Timothy Mtambo, at his residence in Mangochi on Saturday.

January 6, 2021 Wongani Chiuta - Nyasa Times 11 Comments The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has faulted quasi-religious body Public Affairs Committee (PAC) for their proposal that  the State should  discontinue the protracted prosecution of former president Bakili Muluzi on corruption charges relating to K1.7 billion, saying it is tantamount to elevating politics over rule of law. Mhango:  PAC attempting to elevate politics over rule of law Malawi’s former president Bakili Muluzi: The prosecution  of his case has dragged since 2006 PAC  raised  the issue in its statement assessing the year 2020. In the statement, co-signed by PAC chairperson Monsignor Patrick Thawale and publicity secretary the Reverend Gilford Matonga, the body cites the lengthy court case that dates back to 2005 as a waste of public funds; hence, the need to discontinue it and find a political solution.

State funeral for Archbishop Ziyaye: Body arrives on Thursday, burial Saturday

December 17, 2020 Quentin Mzumara – Nyasa Times 17 Comments The body of the late Archbishop of Lilongwe Tarcisius Ziyaye will arrive in the country this Thursday through Kamuzu International Airport  (KIA) at around14:30 hours after  he died at a hospital in Namibia on Monday.  He was 71. Ziyaye to be laid to rest on Saturday After arrival, there will be several masses in Maula Cathedral until burial on Saturday But Catholic Church  communication coordinator  Fr. Louis Chikanya said in a media statement that the main  solemn Requiem Mass will be on Friday at Civo Stadium since it will be State funeral. Maula Parish council had an emergency meeting on Wednesday evening chaired by Monsignor Patrick Thawale,  who was vicar general of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe during Ziyaye’s tenure, where it was confirmed that Ziyaye’s remains are expected to arrive through KIA at 14:30 hours.
