LANCASTER, Calif. â A 37-year-old man who was being treated for COVID-19 is accused of killing his 82-year-old hospital roommate while the elderly man was praying.
Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriffâs Department say the younger man, identified as Jesse Martinez, is facing charges of murder with a hate crime enhancement and elder abuse.
Martinez and the 82-year-old victim were housed in a two-person room together at Antelope Valley Hospital on December 17 when the attack happened. Both were receiving treatment for COVID-19 symptoms.

LOS ANGELES, California - One hospitalized COVID patient was beaten to death by a fellow patient last week, Los Angeles authorities say.
According to the BBC, a 37-year-old man named Jesse Martinez was admitted to Southern California s Antelope Valley Hospital for COVID-19 where he shared a room with an 82-year-old man who also had a coronavirus diagnosis.
But, when the elderly man began to pray, this triggered Martinez s anger and he began beating the 82-year-old with an oxygen tank.
LANCASTER, Calif.
An elderly man hospitalized in Southern California for treatment of COVID-19 was fatally struck by a roommate who became annoyed when the victim began praying, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.
The 82-year-old victim was struck with an oxygen tank on Dec. 17 while housed in a two-person room at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster and died the next day, the department said in a statement. His name was not released.
The suspect, Jesse Martinez, 37, was arrested and charged with murder and other crimes, the department said.
Martinez was being held on $1 million bail and was scheduled for an initial court appearance on Dec. 28. It was not immediately known if he has a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
