Two of Oregon's prisons reported in-custody deaths on Saturday, and both tested positive for the coronavirus Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla, and Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Madras. At Two Rivers, the Oregon Department of Corrections reported that the inmate died on Saturday and was between the ages of 75-85 years old. The DOC said, department-wide, this was the 30th adult in custody who has died with COVID-19.

The Oregon Health Authority on Saturday announced 1,173 confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases and 41 fatalities as the bleak reality from a fall and winter surge leaves a growing number of Oregonians dead.
Saturday marked the third time in a week that Oregon reported at least 40 deaths, with an average of 28 fatalities a day reported over that span. More Oregonians with COVID-19 died in December than in the first six months of the pandemic combined.

The largest active outbreak remains at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario. The outbreak was first identified on June 24 and the case count has continued to rise since then. There have been 582 coronavirus cases linked to the outbreak, with the most recent case reported on Jan. 6.
