The plea entered in Monterey County Superior Court Thursday to 30 counts of assault with a deadly weapon by Charles Lafferty, 54, means he will be sentenced to 15 years in state prison, according to NBC affiliate KSBW-TV. Another 33 counts against him were then dropped by prosecutors. Lafferty was reportedly facing 70 years behind bars for firing projectiles at nine different vehicles driving on Highway 101 and Highway 156 near Prundale between Nov. 2019 and Jan. 2020, according to CHP investigators.

Daniel Ruiz was serving a four-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance for sale and for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to corrections officials. He died July 10. Corrections officials said he was scheduled to be released in September 2021. The lawsuit says he had several risk factors, including asthma, obesity, Hepatitis C and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. By the time his family found out he d been infected, he d been in a hospital intensive care unit for two weeks, was on a ventilator, and was near death.
